The Hanging Gardens project originated in the fall of 2020 with the award of a 2021 Brooklyn Arts Fund Grant. This catalyzed an initial process of design, engineering, fundraising, fabrication, and civic advocacy. An additional $10,000 in funds was raised via a GoFundMe campaign and a NYFA City Artist Corps Grant.
The project was approved for public exhibition through the NYC Art in the Parks program in 2021. During this period the installation was fabricated by lead artist Bryce Peterson over a 5 month period. This immense effort culminated on August 21, 2021 with the opening of the Hanging Gardens in Highland Park, Brooklyn. In 2022 the project received an additional BAC Local Arts Support Grant in partnership with fiscal sponsor Norte Maar to support continuation and enhancement of the project.
In 2023 the project received the Art in the Parks Programs permission for its upcoming exhibition in Herbert Von King Park, as well as a grant from the City Parks Foundation NYC Green Fund to support ongoing operations.
